I get asked a lot from my friends and family about making money from selling homemade cakes.  They often tell me “Kim, I want to start a home bakery business, but I’m very new to baking and I don’t know where to start?”, “I’d love to turn my hobby into a profitable business but I can only bake simple cakes, I can’t do fondant cakes, will people still buy from me?” and “I’m a newbie and I feel absolutely terrified at all the other professional home bakers. I don’t know if I should continue with my dream of owning a cake business or not?”

I get asked a lot from my friends and family about making money from selling homemade cakes. They often tell me “Kim, I want to start a home bakery business, but I am very new to baking and I don’t know where to start?”, “I love to turn my hobby into a profitable business but I can only bake simple cakes, I can’t do fondant cakes, will people still buy from me?” and “I am a newbie and I feel absolutely terrified at all the other professional home bakers. Everyone has to start somewhere right? The most important thing is not to give up, don’t be terrified and always try to improve your skills and knowledge. If you are new to this, you need to bake more, learn the basic art of baking, do it well and perfect it before moving on to fondants, gravity defying cakes and other fancy cakes. Focus on building your foundation & be amazing at the basics. This will help to set you apart from all the other new bakers and you don’t have to worry about having to undercharge for your service. When you have very strong basic baking skills, you will be able to move up fairly quickly.

One great way to improve your skills is to attend classes or learn from experienced bakers. For me, I love learning online. I live in an area where there are no baking studios or schools around. And driving to town and thinking of parking stresses me up.

What is an online course?

Online course or online study is like attending a class or lesson without having to be physically there. You can take the course wherever you want, whenever you want. As long as you have a computer, tablet or phone and good internet connection, you are ready for class! Some of the courses, you can also take offline by downloading all the lessons to your devices. You can learn almost anything online nowadays.

Why I love learning online so much and what are the benefits?

Learn anytime I want – on my own schedule.

For me, the best time to attend a course is late at night when I have finished my orders and home chores. It is also the most peaceful time at home, everyone else is in bed and I can learn without any interruption.

I have lifetime access to the course.

Once I have purchased or downloaded the course, I have a lifetime access to it. I can refer to it anytime I want. Few months or even a few years from now I can browse back at the content to refresh my skills.  No expiry date!

Discussion can be done anytime.

I especially love the Q&A section of the course; if I have any doubts about the ingredients or any questions at all I can ask and either the instructor or other fellow students will join in the discussion. It is a great place to exchange ideas and baking results.

Learn from home, at work during lunch time, in the train, anywhere I want!

If you have a fulltime job or a hectic life, you will love online courses. I used to travel very often by train for work and I dreaded those hours staring at people, staring at the same view or just randomly scrolling on the phone. If I knew about online study back then I could have learned a bunch of different topics and spend my time more wisely. What I love about it is that I can download the course into my phone when I have Wi-Fi and watch it offline.

Self-paced learning

No pressure from others. I can learn as slow or as fast as I want. Not having to wait of worry that I will delay other students. The topic that I’m already familiar with, no problems… I can just fast forward / skip it! And if I come across something that I don’t understand, just rewatch the videos and start a discussion.

Lower cost

Because I don’t have to physically be there, I saved a lot of money on transportation, parking and eating out. And not to mention that the courses online are really cheap too!
