Musing of a home baker - So what’s the deal with all these short videos online on how to make cakes and breads? You know the ones I’m talking about. It’s all over social media. Usually a minute or two long and shot in such a stylized way with nice catchy music that makes you feel all warm and inspired afterwards. And you’re thinking, “I should do that tomorrow, looks easy enough”. Well, let me tell you, it’s not easy.

Usually a minute or two long and shot in such a stylized way with nice catchy music that makes you feel all warm and inspired afterwards. And you’re thinking, “I should do that tomorrow, looks easy enough”.

Well, let me tell you, it’s not easy. First of all, these videos do not show the mess that baking ensures. I mean, cmon, who on earth bakes with no spillage of flour or sugar? Or even a drip of chocolate ganache? And all those matching clean bowls and utensils? Puh-leeze gurl… Who you kidding?

And tell me, who kneads bread with perfectly manicured fingers? With shiny rings and bangles? I’ll tell you who. Someone who doesn’t know what a bain marie is!

All these videos do is impart a fake illusion that anyone can bake and that making sweet treats is not as complicated as it seems. Well, these videos should also include a disclaimer that says: “WARNING: You will fail if you attempt to do this. And all your dreams and hopes will be shattered”

Those videos are meant to be looked at only. Like Kylie Jenner. Don’t try to understand or even imitate either.

You want real baking? Stick to the classics – Nigella, Jamie. They’ll show you what real baking is about. Messy and unplanned. I guess you can put Martha into this category too, if you like your bakers to be ex-convicts.

Have a good week everyone!
